Understanding Mattress Sizes - What You Need to Know Before Buying

When it comes to shopping for mattresses, it's important to be familiar with the different mattress sizes to ensure that you're making the right choice. Most manufacturers usually produce all sizes but there are some types that are only available in select stores or areas even.

Your mattress size will also influence the type of sheets and the number of pillows that you're going to get for your bed. If this is your first time shopping for a mattress and you haven't gotten a bed frame yet, how big your choice is will also influence the type of bed you're supposed to acquire.
There are four different mattress sizes: twin, double, queen and king. Each one of these types has its own pros and cons - details that you need to learn about if you are to find the most suitable product for your specific circumstance.

Twin
The twin mattress is probably the smallest of the mattress sizes available in the market today. The standard size is 39" x 75". This type is ideal for children's rooms and for guest rooms that are supposed to accommodate a lot of people. The twin extra long (80" long), another type of mattress under this classification is designed for adults and teenagers who live in cramped spaces such as college dorms. Comfort is one of the limitations of this mattress especially if it's going to be used by adults or those who have a wider body built. The good thing about it, though, is that its small size allows for mobility.

Double
Double mattresses are just a bit bigger than the twin. It is 54" x 75". The size is suitable for people who live alone or those who have smaller bedrooms. Among the mattress sizes this is one of the most suitable for guest rooms as it offers ample space for one adult to sleep on. There won't be much room for two people, however as each person will only have a sleeping space that is barely the size of a twin bed. Sheets for a double mattress are much more affordable than those for larger mattresses.

Queen
When it comes to mattress sizes, the queen is the second largest in the market. At 60" x 80", it is six inches wider and eight inches longer than the double mattress. This one offers more sleeping space for two adults although it may still be quite cramped for people who have a wider body built. It is also an ideal choice for singles that tend to sleep all over the bed.

King
The king sized mattress is literally what it name implies. Based on its dimensions - the standard one being 76" x 80" - it is the king of mattress sizes. Another type under this category, the California King, is longer where the standard is wider. The California King is 72" x 84". Either of the king sized mattresses are easily the largest ones available in the market.

The size allows for more sleeping space for two adults and even a child or two. This is perfect for couples who have to share a bed but are still craving for enough personal space. However, the large size means limited mobility. It's going to be a bit difficult to maneuver this mattress along steep stairs or narrow halls. Sheets and beddings for the king mattress are also the most expensive in the market.

Whichever of the mattress sizes you opt for, it goes without saying that comfort should be your topmost priority. After all, a mattress is an investment on its own as it is expected to last for many years. You will want to get a product that will suit your needs best and that which is durable enough to withstand the abuse of time.
